Polycystic ovarian syndrome is a condition that affects women in their child-bearing years and alters the levels of multiple hormones. Women with PCOS have metabolism problems that may affect their overall health and appearance. PCOS is the most common and treatable cause of infertility.
SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS:
PCOS is caused as a result of disruption in the normal hormonal cycle. Most women with polycystic ovary syndrome produce excess male sex hormones (androgens), a condition called hyperandrogenism.
It manifests symptoms, such as unusual weight gain, acne (pimples), hair fall, facial hair, irregular menses, male pattern baldness and hyperpigmentation (blackish discoloration of the skin), which are likely to be present in some other disorders too.
In PCOS, multiple cysts in each ovary can be seen with medical imaging. These cysts are small, immature ovarian follicles. Normally, egg cells are contained in ovarian follicles, which are released during ovulation. In polycystic ovary syndrome, abnormal levels of hormones prevent follicles from growing and maturing to release egg cells. Instead, the immature follicles keep accumulating in the ovaries. So, women with PCOD can have 12 or more of these follicles. The number of these follicles usually decreases with age.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:
Who gets PCOS?
Between 5% - 10% of women between 15 & 44, or during the child bearing years, have PCOS. Most women find out they have PCOS in their 20's or 30's when they have problems conceiving and see their doctor. But PCOS can happen anytime after puberty.
Women of all races and ethnicities can be at the risk of PCOS. Risk of PCOS may be higher if you have obesity or if you have a mother, sister, or aunt with PCOS.
Can I still get pregnant if I have PCOS?
This is the biggest concern of women with PCOS. The fact is that some women may have fertility issues due to irregularity in their periods, but these issues can be managed with a well-selected PCOS treatment. Homeopathic treatment is one of the safest to cure PCOS from its root. Homeopathic medicines balance the hormonal axis. They help in regulating the ovulatory cycles, thereby making periods regular and conception possible. They help with the acne, hairfall and weight gain too,
Does the ‘Pill’ cure PCOS?
It is so easy to just pop that pill and get rid of PCOS. I wish this could have been true. Unfortunately, this is the most common myth females have. The hormonal or oral contraceptive pills which are usually prescribed in the conventional mode of treatment are artificial hormones given from outside to regularize the periods. Females get a normal menstrual cycle every month, but the syndrome continues uncured at the background. After a few days of stopping these pills, the hormones again get out of proportion thereby again disrupting the menstrual cycle. They are temporary period regularizing solutions, and they do not cure PCOS.
Is there an inheritance pattern ?
Polycystic ovary syndrome does not have a clear pattern of inheritance, although it is seen that affected individuals usually have a close family member with the condition. It is estimated that 20-40 % of women with PCOS have an affected mother or sister. This increased familial risk is in part attributed to shared genetic factors, but lifestyle factors that are shared by members of a family also play a role.
Can diet & regimen change help ?
Yes, maintaining a good diet and exercise regime does help with the insulin resistance that is common to PCOS patients.
A healthful PCOS diet can also include the following foods:
Natural, unprocessed foods, high-fibre foods, dark, leafy greens, fruits, dried beans, lentils, and other legumes. Also include ghee in meals( it is an Indian superfood)
In general, people on a PCOS diet should avoid these:
Refined carbohydrates, such as mass-produced pastries and white bread,Fried foods, such as fast food, Sugary beverages, such as sodas and energy drinks, Refined oils, Processed meats such as hot dogs, sausages, Excess red meat, such as steaks, hamburgers, and pork.
Physical activity like running, gymming, aerobics, yoga, zumba etc should be done for at least 150 minutes a week. Be physically active. Sedentary lifestyle is one of the many factors related to PCOS occurrence.
